The Edo State House of Assembly has elected Hon. Yekini Idiaye, member representing Akoko-Edo Constituency I, as its new Speaker following the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku.
Idiaye’s emergence came shortly after Agbebaku stepped down from the leadership of the House on Monday amid allegations of an impending impeachment move by some lawmakers.
The new Speaker, in his first remarks after assuming office, reportedly levelled allegations of corruption against his predecessor, adding a fresh political twist to the leadership change at the Assembly.
Agbebaku’s resignation had earlier heightened speculation over growing divisions within the legislative chamber. His media aide, Ivy Ebojele, confirmed the development in a statement but said further details would be made available later.
With Idiaye now at the helm, attention has shifted to how the new leadership will manage the Assembly and address the controversies surrounding the circumstances that led to Agbebaku’s sudden departure.
The leadership change is expected to have significant political implications in Edo, particularly as lawmakers seek to restore stability and cooperation within the House.
Idiaye, a serving lawmaker with experience in the Assembly, now faces the immediate task of uniting members and steering legislative business amid the allegations and political tensions surrounding the transition.
The new Speaker’s accusations against Agbebaku are likely to generate further debate, with political observers expected to closely watch for additional revelations or responses from the former Speaker.
For now, the Edo Assembly has entered a new political chapter, with Idiaye taking charge at a time when questions remain over what triggered Agbebaku’s resignation and whether the leadership crisis is truly over.
