KATSINA — A police officer who identified himself as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) has assaulted a security guard at the main entrance of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina, after being stopped for violating the institution’s vehicle entry regulations.
The incident occurred at about 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, when the officer arrived at the university gate in a dark-tinted Hilux vehicle without a number plate.
The university said its security personnel stopped the vehicle in line with established campus security regulations and refused to grant it access because it did not meet the required conditions for vehicles entering the institution.
According to a report by the Director of Security, CC Mansur Garba (rtd.), the situation escalated after the officer became confrontational with the security personnel.
The officer had reportedly driven past the security guards despite being instructed to stop at the gate. When he was subsequently prevented from exiting the campus, the confrontation intensified.
In the course of the incident, the officer sprayed tear gas directly into the face of one of the security guards, reportedly emptying an entire canister. The spray also affected other people in the vicinity and caused disruption around the university entrance.
The security personnel eventually forced the officer out of his vehicle and seized the tear-gas canister and his examination card.
The university management described the incident as a serious matter, stressing that the security personnel involved were only performing their official duties and enforcing the institution’s established regulations.
Management reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards violence, intimidation, threats, assault and any form of misconduct against its staff and students.
The institution said it was taking appropriate steps to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and would cooperate with relevant authorities to ensure that the matter was addressed in accordance with the law.
UMYU management also appealed for calm, urging all parties to allow the appropriate authorities to investigate the incident and take necessary action based on established facts.
The university reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe, peaceful and orderly environment for students, staff and visitors.
