JOS — Security forces have intensified their crackdown on criminal activities in Plateau State following the arrest of nine suspected drug peddlers during a raid at Zawan Riverside in Jos South Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out on Saturday, September 5, 2026, was conducted by troops of Sector 6, Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), working alongside operatives of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN).
According to security sources, the raid began at about 4:30 p.m. after intelligence reports indicated that the riverside had become a gathering point for suspected criminals, including drug dealers and armed robbery suspects.
Acting on the intelligence, the troops moved into the area and caught nine individuals suspected of being involved in the illicit drug trade.
Several other suspects reportedly escaped into the surrounding areas as the security personnel closed in on the hideout.
The operation also led to the destruction of makeshift canopies allegedly being used as shelters and meeting points by the suspected criminals. The structures were dismantled and set ablaze by the troops.
Security personnel further recovered a substantial quantity of substances suspected to be Indian hemp and other illicit drugs during the operation.
The arrested suspects and the recovered exhibits have since been taken into custody for profiling and further investigation.
The latest operation underscores the continued efforts by security agencies and community-based security groups to dismantle criminal networks and prevent Plateau State from becoming a safe haven for drug trafficking and other violent crimes.
Authorities are expected to take further legal action against the suspects after investigations are concluded.
