Troops of Sector 6, Operation ENDURING PEACE, have intervened in separate incidents involving alleged farm destruction and cattle grazing in restricted areas in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The first incident occurred at about 7:00 a.m. on Monday, August 17, when troops responded to a report that farms belonging to Mrs. Lima Davour and four other farmers at Bindi Village had been destroyed.
On reaching the community, the troops found that the damage had already been done, with the destruction reportedly linked to grazing activities.
The affected farmers had, however, managed to seize a calf allegedly abandoned by herders in the farmland.
The troops secured the animal and moved it to a safe location before contacting Fulani community leaders to facilitate engagement and appropriate action over the incident.
In a separate development at about 2:30 p.m., troops deployed at Rim responded to reports of herders allegedly grazing cattle in restricted areas within the community.
The herders reportedly fled with their cattle after sighting the troops.
The soldiers pursued the fleeing group and recovered a sheep that had been abandoned during the escape.
The animal was also taken to a secure location for further necessary action.
The latest interventions highlight the delicate security challenges surrounding farming and grazing activities in parts of Plateau State, where disputes over farmland and livestock have repeatedly threatened peaceful coexistence.
Security forces have continued to intensify patrols while engaging community and traditional leaders to resolve emerging disputes and prevent local disagreements from escalating into wider violence.
The interventions also underscore the importance of dialogue, respect for grazing restrictions and protection of farmers’ livelihoods in maintaining peace across affected communities.
