The General Officer Commanding (GOC) 3 Division Nigerian Army and Commander, Operation ENDURING PEACE, Maj. Gen. W.M. Dangana, has urged the Mhagavul and Fulani communities in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State to bury their differences and work together to restore lasting peace in the area.
Dangana made the appeal on Monday during a stakeholders’ meeting with leaders of both communities at the 3 Division headquarters.
The engagement, attended by the Chiefs of Staff of Headquarters 3 Division and Operation ENDURING PEACE, was aimed at addressing grievances between the communities and charting a path towards resolving the disputes that have continued to fuel tensions in Mangu.
The GOC called on the stakeholders to shun animosity, reject violence and make dialogue the preferred means of resolving disagreements.
He stressed that lasting peace and strong community relations were crucial to tackling emerging security threats, noting that security agencies could achieve more when communities worked closely with them.
According to him, improved cooperation between the Mhagavul and Fulani communities would build trust, enhance intelligence sharing and create a safer environment for residents to pursue their livelihoods and development.
Dangana also tasked community leaders with taking the peace message to their people and discouraging actions or inflammatory rhetoric capable of worsening tensions.
He urged them to support security agencies with credible information and cooperation to maintain peace and prevent a resurgence of violence.
The meeting formed part of ongoing peacebuilding efforts by the Nigerian Army and other stakeholders to strengthen confidence-building and promote peaceful coexistence among communities in Mangu and other parts of Plateau State.
Mangu has experienced recurring communal tensions in recent years, making sustained dialogue, reconciliation and cooperation between the affected communities critical to preventing further escalation and restoring stability.
