Physiotherapists in Gombe State have joined their counterparts worldwide to commemorate the 2026 World Physiotherapy Day, with the global theme, “Move at Every Age: Protect Your Heart, Avoid Stroke.”
The event, held at the Federal Medical Centre, Kumo, featured a public lecture in honour of a pioneer of physiotherapy in Gombe State, Yahaya Mohammed Tula.
The lecture, titled “Honouring a Pioneer, Sustaining a Legacy and Transforming Rehabilitation Services in Gombe State and Nigeria,” focused on strengthening rehabilitation services and improving access to physiotherapy care, particularly in rural communities.
In a goodwill message, the Lamido Akko, Alhaji Umar Mohammed Atiku, represented by the Chigarin Akko, who is also the Head of Nursing Science, commended the organisers for taking the programme to Kumo.
He emphasised the important role of physiotherapy in healthcare and called for increased health education and awareness among rural communities.
Also speaking, the Mai Tula, represented by the Yabanyan Tula, Yahaya Lamido, appreciated the physiotherapy community for preserving the legacy of their late son.
He described physiotherapy as an essential medical service that requires the support and collaboration of all stakeholders.
The Managing Director of FMC Kumo, Dr Nuhu Ardo Kumo, represented by Dr Muazu Shuaibu Ishaq, the Director General of Gombe Media Corporation, Dr Ibrahim Isa and the Chairman of the Gombe State Society of Physiotherapists, Abdulbaki Sarkin Hausawa, also called for stronger collaboration among relevant institutions.
They stressed that a healthy population contributes to a stronger economy, while advocating increased public awareness and the expansion of physiotherapy services and health programmes to rural communities.
Speaking on the theme, the Head of Physiotherapy at the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe, Hassan Zubairu Chedu, alongside Mr Folorunsho, explained that World Physiotherapy Day is observed annually on September 8 to highlight the contributions of physiotherapists to global health.
They said physiotherapy plays a vital role in restoring movement, improving physical function and enhancing quality of life across all age groups.
They also encouraged greater awareness of non-pharmacological approaches to pain management and the importance of maintaining physical activity throughout life.
The programme featured the presentation of awards to deserving individuals, while a community outreach programme is scheduled to follow as part of activities marking the 2026 World Physiotherapy Day.
