The North East Coalition for Truth, Justice and Responsible Leadership (NECTJRL) has questioned the authenticity of a letter purportedly issued by a group claiming to represent internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Borno State in Kano.
Chairman of the coalition, Alhaji Abba Chima, in a statement issued in Maiduguri, said the group was concerned about the identity and representational status of the organisation behind the letter.
Chima noted that the Borno State Government had, in recent years, facilitated the return and resettlement of displaced persons to their ancestral communities, leading to the gradual closure of IDP camps in the state.
He therefore questioned the basis for the claim of representation of Borno IDPs in Kano, while urging the public to exercise caution when assessing statements issued in the name of displaced persons.
The NECTJRL chairman also expressed support for Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, saying his political experience and contributions to the North-East were well known.
He said disagreements over political issues should be addressed through recognised and legitimate channels, rather than through correspondence whose source or representation could not be clearly established.
Chima further called for greater sensitivity in the handling of issues involving displaced persons, stressing that their experiences should not be used in ways that could further politicise their situation.
He said NECTJRL would continue to promote what it described as responsible leadership, truth and accountability in matters affecting the North-East.
