NEW YORK — A quiet Saturday night on New York Harbor turned into a desperate fight for survival when a boat capsized near Liberty Island, leaving a five-month-old baby and a 27-year-old woman dead and 12 others injured.
The tragedy unfolded at about 10:30 p.m., when emergency authorities received a distress call and rushed to the scene as people aboard the vessel were plunged into the water.
NYPD divers and New York City firefighters immediately launched a rescue operation, racing against time to locate and pull survivors from the harbor.
Despite the frantic efforts of first responders, two victims could not be saved.
Police identified them as a 27-year-old woman and a five-month-old girl. Both were rushed to NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, where they were later pronounced dead.
The remaining 12 people aboard the boat were rescued and taken to hospitals in the area after suffering minor injuries, according to the Fire Department of the City of New York.
The nighttime emergency triggered a major response, with police divers and firefighters working together to search the waters and bring those in distress to safety.
The circumstances that caused the boat to capsize were not immediately disclosed by authorities. Investigators are expected to examine what happened before the vessel overturned and determine whether any factors contributed to the deadly incident.
For the survivors, what began as an ordinary night on the harbor ended in tragedy, with the loss of two lives — including that of an infant — casting a shadow over the rescue operation.
