……From Nigeria to Washington: Four Nigerian-Americans break new ground in US politics
By: Abdullahi Inuwa
Four Nigerians have made their mark on American politics, emerging victorious in the 2026 United States mid-term elections and securing elective positions across four political jurisdictions.
Will Jawando, Junior Ezeonu, Oye Owolewa and Carol Kazeem are the Nigerian-Americans whose victories have brought fresh attention to the growing political influence of Nigerians in the United States.
The four Democrats secured positions in local government and state legislatures across Maryland, Texas, Washington DC and Pennsylvania, according to results released on Wednesday.
Their victories signal another remarkable chapter in the story of Nigerian immigrants and their descendants, demonstrating how members of the diaspora are increasingly moving beyond economic and professional achievements to occupy influential positions in public leadership.
The electoral breakthrough also coincided with a major political shift in the United States, as the Democratic Party flipped control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate.
For Nigeria, the emergence of four citizens of Nigerian heritage in American elective offices represents a moment of pride for the diaspora, particularly as Nigerians continue to establish their presence in politics, governance and public service abroad.
Beyond the individual victories, the results highlight the expanding footprint of Nigerian-Americans in the American democratic process and their growing capacity to shape decisions within the communities and institutions where they live.
