The Gombe State Committee on Farmers-Herders Prevention and Settlement of Disputes has concluded its advocacy visits to traditional rulers and local government chairmen across the state, calling for strict compliance with measures aimed at ensuring a peaceful harvest season.
The committee emphasised the restriction of herders’ movement into and within the state from October 2026 to the end of January 2027 as part of efforts to prevent clashes between farmers and herders.
Speaking during visits to the palaces of Mai Tula and Mai Tangale, as well as the Shongom Local Government Secretariat, the committee chairman and Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Alhaji Abdulkadir Mohammad, said Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya constituted the committee out of concern for peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders.
He urged herders to avoid night grazing and cautioned against entrusting cattle to underage children.
He also advised farmers to avoid harvesting their crops at night to minimise possible clashes.
The Governor’s Special Adviser on Agriculture and Farmers-Herders Coordination, Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi Habun DK, called on both groups to sustain harmonious relationships, describing farmers and herders as partners in community development.
Similarly, the state chairmen of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Modibbo Sadiq Ahmad Nafada, and Miyetti Allah, Alhaji Modibbo Yaya, urged their members to comply with the guidelines for a peaceful harvest period.
The chairmen of Kaltungo East LCDA, Dr Banabas Malle; Shongom Local Government, Mr Mudi Shelfidi; and Billiri Local Government, Mrs Egla Idris, appreciated the committee’s visit and pledged their support towards ensuring peace in their respective areas.
In their separate remarks, the Mai Tula, Alhaji Mohammad Danjumma Mohammad; Mai Tangale, Malam Sanusi Danladi Maiyamba, represented by Alhaji Zakari Yau Waziri; and the District Head of Shongom, Mr Dahiru Alfayo Yusuf, commended the governor for establishing the committee and pledged their support for its peace-building efforts.
