The Deputy Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdullahi Musa Askira, has announced his withdrawal from the race for the Southern Borno Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, pledging full support for Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume.
Speaking at a press conference held on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at the NUJ Press Centre in Maiduguri, Hon. Abdullahi Askira said he had received widespread calls from stakeholders across the nine local government areas of Southern Borno urging him to contest. He noted that the outpouring of support reflected strong confidence in his leadership.
Hon. Abdullahi Askira stated that he was deeply humbled by the trust reposed in him, adding that he did not take such encouragement for granted. He, however, explained that after extensive consultations and careful reflection, including a meeting with the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, he resolved to step aside in the overall interest of the All Progressives Congress, Southern Borno, and the state at large.
Hon. Abdullahi Askira declared that his decision was guided by the need to promote unity, loyalty, and collective progress within the party. He formally endorsed Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume to continue representing Southern Borno in the Senate, describing him as a leader with proven experience, capacity, and commitment to the people.
Hon. Abdullahi Askira called on his supporters, political associates, and well wishers to accept his decision in good faith and to rally behind Senator Ndume. He urged members of the APC across Southern Borno to remain united and work diligently toward the party’s success in the 2027 general elections, emphasizing that power ultimately comes from Almighty Allah.
Hon. Abdullahi Askira expressed appreciation to his supporters, campaign council, and media team for their dedication, sacrifices, and unwavering belief in his leadership. He acknowledged their contributions as instrumental to his political journey and assured them of his continued commitment to public service.
Hon. Abdullahi Askira also extended gratitude to the Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, the Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, the leadership of the APC, as well as traditional rulers, elders, youths, and women across Southern Borno for their sustained support and encouragement.
During an interactive session with journalists after the briefing, Hon. Abdullahi Askira disclosed that he has spent about two decades in the Borno State House of Assembly, making him one of the longest serving lawmakers and Deputy Speakers in the state’s history.
Hon. Abdullahi Askira announced that he would not seek re election to the State House of Assembly in 2027, explaining that the decision was aimed at giving others the opportunity to serve and contribute. He noted that having served extensively, he believes it is time to support new leadership and explore other avenues of service.
Hon. Abdullahi Askira assured that he would fully support any consensus candidate that emerges, stressing the importance of unity and collective responsibility in advancing the interests of Southern Borno.
