ABUJA — The Nigeria Police Force has issued a strong warning to Nigerians against paying money to secure bail at police stations, declaring that demanding payment for bail is against the law.
The warning, delivered by the Force spokesman, urged citizens to reject any officer who asks them to pay for bail and immediately escalate the matter to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
“The law does not allow anyone to pay for bail at any police station. If you’re asked to pay for bail, simply walk outside and call the IGP,” the spokesman said.
To make reporting easier, members of the public can reach the IGP through 08057000001 or 08057000002 when confronted with an alleged demand for bail money.
The police stressed that citizens should not feel intimidated or compelled to pay unlawful charges, urging anyone faced with such a situation to report it through the designated channels.
The latest warning is expected to further strengthen efforts to tackle alleged extortion and misconduct within the police system, while reassuring Nigerians that lawful bail should not be turned into a source of financial exploitation.
