Attempted Coup Rocks Niger as Military Junta Regains Control

Niamey, Niger — Tension gripped Niger after a group of mutinous soldiers reportedly attempted to seize power, forcing the country’s military leadership to move swiftly to contain the uprising.

The military authorities later announced that the situation had been brought under control, insisting that the junta remained firmly in charge of the country.

The attempted takeover reportedly triggered heightened security measures in the capital as loyalist forces moved to restore order and prevent the mutiny from escalating into a broader confrontation.

Niger’s neighbours, Burkina Faso and Algeria, were said to have played a role in efforts to stabilise the situation, while Russia also provided assistance as the military leadership worked to consolidate its position.

The development has renewed concerns over political stability in the Sahel, a region that has witnessed a series of military takeovers and growing security challenges in recent years.

Despite the reported mutiny, Niger’s military authorities maintained that the chain of command had been restored and that the government remained in control.

The latest incident is likely to attract close attention across West Africa, where fears of further instability have remained high following previous coups in the region.
