Birnin Kebbi became the centre of high-level political consultations on Tuesday as governors seeking re-election for a second term gathered in the Kebbi State capital for a strategic meeting ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, who is hosting the gathering, received his colleagues at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi before they proceeded into a closed-door session.
The meeting brought together governors from across the country’s six geopolitical zones. The North-West was represented by Kebbi, Kano, Kaduna, Jigawa, Sokoto and Zamfara States, while the North-Central had governors from Plateau, Benue, Kogi and Niger.
Also represented were Taraba from the North-East; Enugu and Ebonyi from the South-East; Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Delta and Rivers from the South-South; and Ondo and Ekiti from the South-West.
However, four of the 20 governors expected at the meeting were absent.
They include Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda, Niger State Governor Umar Bago, Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Although the agenda of the meeting was not officially disclosed, it is believed to focus on issues surrounding governance and preparations ahead of the 2027 elections.
