The Yobe State Government has donated sporting equipment to security agencies operating in the state as part of efforts to strengthen civil-security relations and support post-insurgency recovery through sports.
Presenting the items on behalf of the government, the Commissioner for Youth, Sports, Social and Community Development, Alhaji Barma Shettima, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to promoting healthy recreation and wellness among security personnel. He was represented by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Muhammad Gidado Abubakar.
The commissioner described sports as a powerful tool for fostering unity, teamwork and stronger relationships between security agencies and the communities they serve, noting that the initiative aligns with Governor Mai Mala Buni’s vision of building a peaceful, healthy and productive society.
He said each benefiting security agency received 18 football jerseys, two tracksuits, two footballs, 12 pairs of football boots and other sporting materials in appreciation of their unwavering efforts in maintaining peace and security across the state.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Lieutenant Colonel W.O. Ahmad of the Nigerian Army thanked the state government for the gesture, saying the equipment would enhance sporting activities within the security agencies and encourage stronger interaction with host communities through football competitions and other recreational events.
Also speaking, the North-East Zonal Vice President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Comrade Ahmad Kagana Amshi, commended the Yobe State Government for its sustained investment in sports development, describing it as a vital component of post-conflict recovery and social cohesion.
He pledged SWAN’s continued support in promoting sports development across Yobe State, the North-East region and Nigeria as a whole.
