Troops of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) have confirmed an attack on Lawet community in Pushit District of Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, where suspected armed Mwaghavul youths reportedly killed 12 cattle, injured 12 others and rustled several more.
The incident occurred at about 8:10 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2026, following a distress call that prompted troops of Sector 8, OPEP, to mobilise to the affected community.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the attackers reportedly stormed the area and targeted livestock belonging to local herders.
On reaching the scene, the troops found 12 cattle killed and another 12 injured, while several others had been driven away by the attackers.
The troops subsequently launched a tracking operation to locate the rustled livestock.
The operation yielded results after the troops traced the cattle to the general area of Pankshin, where the animals were recovered and secured.
Security sources said the recovery prevented the complete loss of the livestock and could assist ongoing efforts to unravel those behind the attack.
Following the incident, troops have sustained search and offensive operations around Lawet and neighbouring communities, with the objective of locating the perpetrators and preventing further attacks.
The latest incident comes amid continuing tension in parts of Mangu, where violence involving communities and livestock has raised concerns over possible retaliatory attacks.
Security agencies are expected to strengthen patrols, surveillance and intelligence-led operations along the Mangu-Pankshin axis as investigations continue into the identities and activities of those responsible.
Authorities are also working to contain the situation and prevent the latest attack from escalating into another cycle of reprisals in the affected communities.
