The Nigerian Army has deployed an additional 178 personnel from the 236 Tank Battalion to strengthen security operations under Sector 8 of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP) in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The deployment, carried out at about 4:40 p.m. on September 25, 2026, is part of the Army’s ongoing restructuring aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness and strengthening its presence in areas facing security challenges.
The first batch of troops arrived at the Headquarters of Sector 8 OPEP in two groups of 89 personnel each, bringing the total number to 178.
The contingent was led by the Commanding Officer of 236 Tank Battalion, Lt. Col. H.O. Obire, and was formally received by the Commander of Sector 8 OPEP.
Security sources told Zagazola Makama that the newly deployed troops immediately commenced familiarisation with the sector’s Area of Responsibility (AOR), including its operational terrain, security challenges and assigned responsibilities.
Their deployment comes at a time of renewed security concerns in Mangu and neighbouring communities, following reports of attacks, killings, destruction of livestock and reprisal incidents recorded in different parts of the area during September.
The additional troops are expected to boost the military’s presence in vulnerable communities and reinforce ongoing efforts to prevent further attacks and respond swiftly to emerging threats.
They will also operate alongside other security and response agencies within the sector to enhance coordination, protect civilians and support efforts to restore and sustain peace across affected communities.
The deployment is expected to further strengthen the capacity of Sector 8 OPEP to maintain security and respond to threats within its operational area.
