Fresh tension is brewing in Plateau State following the suspected poisoning of livestock in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, where nine cattle were confirmed dead and three others left in critical condition.
Security sources revealed that troops of Operation Safe Haven rushed to Rakum village in Kassa District at about 1625 hours on April 18 after receiving distress reports from herders.
The cattle, belonging to one Dauda Jalo, were said to have suddenly fallen ill while grazing, raising alarm within the community. Upon arrival, troops discovered nine carcasses, while three other animals were battling for survival.
Preliminary findings suggest the livestock may have ingested a poisonous substance in the grazing fields, sparking fears of deliberate contamination and heightening anxiety among residents.
The incident, described by sources as unprovoked, has added to growing concerns over farmer-herder relations in the area, with security agencies moving swiftly to assess the situation and prevent possible escalation.
Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the suspected poisoning, as efforts intensify to maintain peace and stability in Barkin Ladi and adjoining communities.
