Troops Kill Suspected Terrorist, Recover Two AK-47 Rifles in Plateau

Borno State Government

WASE, Plateau State — Troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE have intercepted a vehicle allegedly being used to transport firearms, killing a suspected terrorist and recovering two AK-47 rifles in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The operation took place at about 9:50 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, during a routine stop-and-search exercise at Zak village.

According to a military source, troops of Sector 2 intercepted a green Volkswagen Golf with registration number DKA-808XM and subjected it to a thorough search.

The inspection reportedly uncovered a secret compartment concealed inside the vehicle’s dashboard, prompting soldiers to order the driver to open it.

The driver, however, allegedly refused to comply and suddenly bolted into a nearby bush.

Troops immediately gave chase while other personnel remained with the vehicle to secure the scene and continue the search.

The fleeing suspect was eventually apprehended but allegedly attempted to disarm one of the soldiers during the arrest.

The troops responded, and the suspect was subsequently neutralised.

A further search of the vehicle uncovered two AK-47 rifles, bearing registration numbers 506034 and 4690, alongside one magazine.

Military authorities also recovered two wooden rifle butts, nine magazine pouches, two camel bags, six jungle hats, a mobile phone and an ATM card.

The discovery has heightened concerns over the movement of illicit firearms through Plateau State, particularly amid efforts by security agencies to disrupt the activities and logistics networks of armed groups.

The troops’ operation is part of sustained stop-and-search and patrol activities being conducted under Operation ENDURING PEACE to prevent the movement of weapons, disrupt criminal networks and safeguard communities across the state.

Security personnel have continued to intensify patrols along vulnerable routes and around communities considered susceptible to attacks, with intelligence-led operations being deployed to detect and frustrate the activities of armed groups.

The latest interception also underscores the importance of routine vehicle searches, which can expose sophisticated methods allegedly used to conceal weapons and other military-related equipment.

The recovered firearms and other items have been taken into military custody as investigations continue into their source, intended destination and possible links to criminal or terrorist networks.
