Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested a group of individuals parading as masquerades for violating government directives regulating cultural displays across the state.
The suspects were intercepted along the Onna–Ikot Abasi Road while allegedly heading to carry out activities deemed capable of disrupting public peace. Authorities say the operation was in line with standing orders issued by Commissioner of Police Baba Mohammed Azare, which restrict masquerade appearances to approved locations such as village squares and town halls.
Preliminary findings revealed the group had been hired to perform at a burial ceremony in Onna, a move police say breached established safety regulations.
The suspects are currently in custody and will face prosecution, while efforts are ongoing to track down the individual who engaged them.
The Command has issued a stern warning to residents, event organizers, and community leaders to comply strictly with existing guidelines, stressing that cultural practices must not be used as a cover to threaten public order.
Police reaffirmed their commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.
