The Kebbi State Government has begun delivering on one of Governor Nasir Idris’ flagship campaign promises, rolling out 110 truckloads of free fertiliser and improved seeds to thousands of farmers in a major push to strengthen food production ahead of the 2026 wet farming season.
Flagging off the distribution at Haliru Abdu Stadium in Birnin Kebbi on Thursday, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Alhaji Shehu Mu’azu, said the intervention fulfilled the governor’s annual commitment under the KADAGE programme to provide free agricultural inputs to farmers across the state.
He said the initiative reflects the administration’s determination to ease the burden on farmers, boost crop yields and reinforce Kebbi’s position as one of Nigeria’s leading food-producing states.
According to Mu’azu, Governor Idris’ agricultural agenda extends beyond fertiliser distribution, noting that the government has already supplied over 5,000 power tillers, 45,000 solar and fuel-powered irrigation pumps and about 6,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser annually to farmers across the state.
He further disclosed that an additional 100 metric tonnes of improved, climate-resilient seed varieties would also be distributed free of charge to support farmers during the current farming season.
The Commissioner described agriculture as the cornerstone of the state’s economic development strategy, stressing that the government would continue investing in modern farming techniques and climate-smart agriculture to improve productivity and rural livelihoods.
Meanwhile, the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Yakubu Bala-Tafida, warned that anyone caught diverting or selling the fertiliser would face sanctions.
He said the state had inaugurated a high-powered fertiliser distribution committee comprising commissioners, members of the State House of Assembly, special advisers, local government chairmen, traditional rulers and security agencies to guarantee transparency and accountability.
Bala-Tafida explained that the committee would supervise the distribution across all 225 wards and 3,743 polling units to ensure the farm inputs reach genuine beneficiaries.
The latest intervention underscores the Kebbi Government’s sustained drive to empower farmers, expand agricultural production and enhance food security through the fulfilment of campaign promises.
