Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have dealt a major blow to Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists after a precision airstrike reportedly killed eight fighters in the volatile Timbuktu Triangle of Borno State.
The strike, carried out late Tuesday night, August 18, followed intelligence indicating that a group of suspected ISWAP fighters had gathered at Thethangala, an area identified as an important operational zone for the terrorist group.
Zagazola Makama gathered from intelligence sources that the operation commenced at about 9:56 p.m. after a Guardian aircraft deployed for surveillance located the suspected terrorists.
According to the sources, eight fighters were spotted assembled at the location and apparently preparing to launch an attack on Nigerian troops operating in the area.
The aircraft subsequently engaged the identified target in a precision strike.
A post-strike assessment indicated that all eight terrorists were neutralised, with no further movement detected around the target area after the bombardment.
The successful operation is expected to further disrupt ISWAP activities in the Timbuktu Triangle, an area where insurgents have repeatedly attempted to establish operational footholds and coordinate attacks against security forces.
Military authorities said the overall security situation in the area remained calm but unpredictable, while troops continued to maintain a satisfactory level of morale and combat readiness.
The latest air operation forms part of the sustained offensive by Operation HADIN KAI, which has intensified coordinated air and ground operations against terrorist fighters, camps and logistics networks across the North-East.
The military has continued to target insurgent formations attempting to regroup, replenish their supplies and launch attacks on military positions, particularly in remote areas of Borno State.
