AKWA IBOM — Tension gripped Iton Odoro Village in Ikono Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State after a suspected hoodlum allegedly stormed a family compound armed with a locally made gun and threatened the occupants.

The suspect, identified as Emmanuel Okoyo, was, however, overpowered and arrested by police operatives following a distress call from concerned residents.

The incident occurred at about 6:30 p.m. on August 17, 2026, when the Akwa Ibom State Police Command received credible information that an armed man was terrorising a household in the community.

Responding swiftly, police operatives mobilised to the area in collaboration with vigilant members of the community. The suspect was intercepted and disarmed before he could cause harm, with no casualty recorded.

The complainant told the police that he was at home with his family when Okoyo allegedly entered the compound through the back gate and confronted them with the locally manufactured single-barrel firearm.

The suspect remains in police custody, while the recovered firearm has been secured as an exhibit as investigators probe the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Commending the residents for their timely intervention, the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, fsi, also praised the officers for what he described as a prompt and professional response.

Azare reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property across Akwa Ibom, urging residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons and criminal activities.

The Commissioner stressed that timely information from members of the public remains vital in helping security agencies prevent attacks and apprehend criminals before they can strike.

The latest arrest underscores the growing importance of community-police cooperation in tackling armed threats and other criminal activities across the state.
