Nigeria’s two largest labour centres, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over the worsening state of insecurity across the country.
The labour unions expressed concern over the increasing incidents of killings, kidnappings, banditry, and terrorist attacks, warning that the deteriorating security situation is threatening lives, livelihoods, and economic activities nationwide.
The NLC and TUC said workers and ordinary Nigerians can no longer continue to live in fear, stressing that urgent and decisive action is needed to halt the growing wave of violence.
According to the unions, the persistent insecurity has disrupted businesses, forced farmers off their lands, increased food prices, and deepened hardship for millions of citizens.
Labour leaders urged the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect lives and property, warning that failure to address the crisis could compel organised labour to mobilise workers for a nationwide industrial action.
The threat signals growing frustration among Nigerians over the country’s security challenges, with the unions insisting that safeguarding citizens must remain the government’s top priority.
The NLC and TUC vowed to continue pressing for concrete measures to restore peace and security, saying no meaningful economic growth can occur in an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.
