Former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Daura, has criticised individuals who served around former President Muhammadu Buhari, accusing some of them of exploiting the trust placed in them during his administration.
Daura, who is also the vice-presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), alleged that Buhari’s government was surrounded by “sycophants” who took advantage of their proximity to the former president.
“There were so many sycophants around Buhari; they betrayed the trust he gave them and took advantage of that government,” Daura said.
His remarks have renewed debate over the inner workings of the Buhari administration and the influence wielded by individuals who occupied strategic positions around the former president.
Daura’s comments also raise questions about how advisers and political allies can shape the direction of government, particularly when those close to the centre of power enjoy the confidence of the president.
The former DSS chief’s assessment is likely to fuel fresh political discussions over accountability, loyalty and the responsibilities of those entrusted with public office during Buhari’s tenure.
