The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has ignited a heated debate with its recent call for a change in the leadership of the National Judicial Council (NJC).

This move comes as the NBA expresses concerns about the effectiveness of the NJC in addressing judicial misconduct across the nation.

In a bold statement, the NBA highlighted the flaws in the current composition of the NJC, emphasizing the need for a more balanced and transparent approach to judicial oversight.

According to the NBA, the current setup undermines public confidence in the judiciary’s ability to uphold integrity and accountability.

Proposing a revamped structure, the NBA recommended a diverse panel of members for the NJC.

This includes six judicial officers appointed by the Chief Judge of Nigeria (CJN), six lawyers nominated by the NBA’s National Executive Council (including the NBA President), and six non-lawyers appointed by the President of Nigeria, subject to Senate approval.

The proposed restructuring also suggests rotating the chairmanship among these groups to ensure fair representation and impartial decision-making.

NBA’s proposal aims to address systemic issues within court administration that have been flagged as potential hotspots for corrupt activities.

By streamlining responsibilities and enhancing oversight mechanisms, the NBA believes that the judiciary can focus more effectively on its core mandate of delivering justice without distractions.

This call for change has sparked widespread discussions among legal circles and the public, with opinions divided on the best approach to strengthen judicial integrity and accountability in Nigeria’s legal system.

As the debate unfolds, all eyes are on the path forward for the NJC and the broader implications for Nigeria’s judiciary.
