Africa’s richest industrialist, Aliko Dangote, says he wants the planned Initial Public Offering (IPO) of his $20 billion Dangote Petroleum Refinery to create long-term wealth for ordinary Africans.
Dangote said the ambition is to make the refinery’s share offering comparable to the early investment opportunities associated with global technology giant Amazon, where early investors who committed significant funds went on to build substantial wealth over the years.
“We want the Dangote refinery IPO to be like Amazon’s — where if you invest thousands of dollars today, you could become a millionaire in the years to come,” Dangote said.
According to the billionaire businessman, the objective is not to keep the benefits of the refinery within his immediate business circle, but to open up opportunities for Africans to participate in the company’s future growth.
“We don’t want to be the only ones enjoying, we want to spread this enjoyment to the rest of Africans,” he added.
The planned IPO could mark a significant step in widening public ownership of one of Africa’s largest industrial projects, potentially allowing investors to share in the refinery’s future performance.
Dangote’s remarks also underline his broader vision of using large-scale African businesses not only to drive industrialisation but also to create investment opportunities capable of transferring wealth across generations.
If successfully executed, the proposed share offering could attract significant interest from investors within Nigeria and across the continent, particularly those seeking opportunities to participate in Africa’s expanding energy and industrial sectors.
