…Youth leaders being trailed as CP vows crackdown on political intolerance

The Benue State Police Command has arrested 46 suspects in connection with the reported attack and disruption of the convoy of Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the state.
The arrests followed a police investigation launched after the incident, which reportedly occurred during Obi’s visit to Benue and sparked concerns over rising political tension ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The State Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, disclosed the development while addressing journalists in Makurdi, saying the investigation had not been concluded.
Nwadiogbu said the command was also tracking some key youth leaders believed to have links with the incident, indicating that more arrests could follow as investigators piece together what transpired.
The police boss warned that Benue would not become a battleground for political intolerance, stressing that the command would move against individuals or groups whose actions threaten peace and public safety.
He urged political actors and their supporters to embrace tolerance and allow others to freely participate in political activities without intimidation or violence.
With political activities already gathering momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, the commissioner said the police would remain vigilant and take necessary steps to prevent politically motivated violence across the state.
The command maintained that those found culpable after investigation would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The incident has added to growing concerns over the conduct of political activities in the run-up to the 2027 elections, with security agencies increasingly warning politicians and their supporters against actions capable of triggering violence.
