The Kebbi State Government says it has intensified efforts to tackle unemployment and youth restiveness, announcing that over 755 youth groups have been registered across the state within the last three years as part of its empowerment drive.
The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Alhaji Nuradden Bala Fingilla, disclosed this during a ministerial press briefing held at the New State Secretariat Complex, Birnin Kebbi.
He said the state government remains committed to building a self-reliant generation through sustained training, empowerment programmes and skills acquisition initiatives targeted at young people across the 21 local government areas.
According to him, various youth groups comprising both men and women have benefited from training in diverse skills while also being sensitised on the dangers of drug abuse, political thuggery, and the importance of peaceful conflict resolution, particularly in farmer–herder relations.
Fingilla further revealed that the government has completed four skills acquisition centres located in Gwandu, Argungu, Yauri and Zuru Emirates, designed to serve as training hubs and transit points for unemployed youths. He added that the State Youth Council has also been fully implemented to strengthen youth participation in governance.
At the centres, beneficiaries are trained in various trades including cosmetics production, tailoring, dyeing, solar installation, computer and phone repairs, hairdressing, and food production such as popcorn making, among others.
On sports development, the commissioner said Kebbi State had recorded notable achievements both locally and internationally, performing impressively in various competitions and traditional sporting events.
He added that the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development placed the state 5th nationally and 2nd in Northern Nigeria at the recently concluded National Sports Festival.
Fingilla also highlighted key infrastructural projects, including the completion and handover of the FIFA Goal Project, as well as extensive renovation works at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Dakin Gari and Basaura. The upgrades include a female hostel, clinic, mosque, toilets, borehole, a KVA transformer, and solar power installation.
