ISWAP in Panic as Military Eliminates Senior Commander WAL-GEGE in Dikwa

Borno State Government

Fresh concerns are reportedly mounting within the ranks of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) following the reported death of one of its senior commanders, identified as WAL-GEGE, during an intelligence-led Nigerian Air Force operation in Dikwa Local Government Area of Borno State.

WAL-GEGE was reportedly targeted while travelling on a motorcycle along a major route around the Gargash axis, close to a suspected ISWAP hideout and the group’s Markaz in the area.

Intelligence sources said the operation was carried out by the Nigerian Air Force Component of Operation HADIN KAI as part of ongoing efforts to track and disrupt senior terrorist commanders and their movements across the Dikwa axis.

The reported loss has triggered unease among ISWAP fighters, particularly because the commander was said to have been operating within an area regarded as being under the group’s influence.

Sources said the development has sparked an internal security review within the terrorist organisation, with suspicions reportedly growing that information about WAL-GEGE’s movement may have been leaked from within its ranks.

The development has also heightened concerns over possible intelligence penetration, prompting ISWAP operatives to reassess how commanders communicate and move between locations.

According to intelligence reports, some members of the group are now considering tighter restrictions on mobile-phone usage among field commanders and fighters, amid fears that communications could expose their locations to security forces.

The reported reaction underscores the growing pressure being brought to bear on terrorist networks through intelligence gathering, aerial surveillance and precision military operations.

The death of a senior commander could also affect ISWAP’s ability to coordinate fighters, move supplies and organise attacks, although the group has historically demonstrated the capacity to reorganise after losing key personnel.

Military operations around Dikwa and other parts of Borno have increasingly focused on disrupting terrorist concentrations before they can mobilise for attacks against troops and civilian communities.

The reported strike also highlights the critical role of intelligence in counter-insurgency operations, as security forces continue to combine surveillance capabilities with air and ground operations to track terrorist movements.

However, security analysts have cautioned that ISWAP may respond by adopting alternative communication channels and changing its movement patterns in an effort to evade detection.

WAL-GEGE’s reported elimination comes amid sustained military pressure on ISWAP and other terrorist elements operating in Borno and the wider Lake Chad Basin.

The Nigerian military has continued to deploy intelligence-driven air operations alongside ground surveillance and clearance missions aimed at degrading terrorist leadership, logistics networks and operational bases.

While the long-term impact of the commander’s reported death remains to be seen, the apparent panic and suspicion within ISWAP could create additional pressure on the group’s internal command structure.

The growing fear of information leaks may also force its commanders to restrict movement and communication, potentially complicating the group’s ability to coordinate operations across the region.
