The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared May 30, 2026, as a day of solemn remembrance for those who lost their lives during the Nigerian civil war, describing the date as a period for reflection, mourning and honouring fallen heroes and heroines of Biafra.
In a statement, the group said the annual observance is aimed at remembering millions of people who died during the conflict, while also paying tribute to those it describes as Biafran heroes.
IPOB urged supporters and residents to observe the day with reflection and remembrance, calling for a sit-at-home in honour of the fallen.
The group maintained that the commemoration is not only about history, but also about preserving collective memory and acknowledging the sacrifices made during the war era.
The declaration comes ahead of May 30 activities often observed in parts of the South-East, where the group has continued to mark the day as a symbolic moment of remembrance.
