The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a fresh warning to political parties, insisting that any primary election conducted outside its stipulated May 30 deadline remains invalid and of no effect, except where a superior court rules otherwise.
The electoral umpire maintained that it is bound by an existing judgment of the Federal High Court on the matter, and will continue to enforce compliance until such a decision is overturned by a higher court.
INEC’s position comes amid growing concerns within political circles over the legality of some party primaries conducted after the deadline, with implications for candidate nominations ahead of future elections.
According to the commission, adherence to the electoral timetable is not optional, stressing that party primaries must strictly comply with guidelines issued for the conduct of elections in the country.
The commission warned that it would not recognise any nomination arising from primaries held outside the approved schedule, except where a competent appellate court provides a contrary interpretation of the law.
