Tension erupted in Washington on Monday as a group of US military veterans staged a dramatic occupation inside the Cannon House Office Building at the nation’s Capitol, in a bold protest against ongoing US military involvement in Iran and Israel’s war in Gaza.
The action, carried out by members of the veteran-led anti-war movement, saw demonstrators take over parts of the congressional office complex, demanding an immediate end to what they described as “unjust wars and humanitarian devastation.”
Eyewitnesses said the veterans, some wearing military insignia and protest shirts, entered the building in coordinated fashion and began a sit-in, chanting anti-war slogans calling for an end to US funding and military support for overseas conflicts.
The protest comes amid rising global backlash over the escalating Middle East crisis, where activists have accused both Washington and its allies of fueling violence and civilian suffering.
Similar demonstrations in recent months have seen mass arrests during sit-ins at congressional buildings over US military aid to Israel and concerns about regional escalation.
