Tension exploded late Sunday in Plateau State as angry youths and women stormed a military position, setting a checkpoint ablaze in protest over the killing of a local resident.
The unrest occurred in Kassa community, Kassa District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, shortly after the burial of a villager identified as Gyang Nuhu Choji, who was reportedly killed on April 16 by suspected armed attackers.
Security sources said the situation escalated at about 11:40 p.m. when the crowd overran the military checkpoint at Rapung Kassa, destroying structures and equipment used by troops deployed in the area.
The attack reportedly caught soldiers stationed at the location off guard as the mob expressed anger over what they described as repeated killings in the community despite the presence of security forces.
Eyewitnesses said the protesters, made up largely of youths and women, accused security operatives of failing to prevent recurring attacks, insisting that military deployment had not translated into real protection for residents.
The demonstration quickly spiraled out of control, leading to the burning of the checkpoint and disruption of security operations in the area.
The incident underscores the deepening frustration in parts of Plateau State, where communities continue to face violent attacks blamed on armed groups operating within the region.
Security authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident, but calm has reportedly been restored as reinforcements moved into the area.
