GENEVA — UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has presented deeply disturbing testimonies from Palestinian survivors who described alleged rape, torture and abuse during detention.
Addressing the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Albanese read accounts attributed to Palestinian detainees, describing brutal treatment they said they experienced while in Israeli detention facilities.
One survivor reportedly recounted being restrained to a metal bed while pressure was applied to their chest and head, before describing an alleged sexual assault.
Another testimony described alleged rape while the detainee was blindfolded, alongside repeated beatings. The survivor said they heard what appeared to be a camera operating and believed the assault was being recorded.
“I can’t describe what I felt. I wished I was dead. Every moment,” another survivor reportedly said.
Albanese also cited figures indicating that more than 18,500 Palestinians have been detained since October 7, while at least 100 detainees, including a child, are reported to have died in detention. She further referenced claims that about 4,000 people have been forcibly disappeared.
The testimonies and figures have added to growing international scrutiny of the treatment of Palestinians held in detention amid the continuing Israel-Gaza conflict.
Albanese concluded with a stark warning about the broader implications of alleged abuses in Palestine, saying:
