The Kebbi State Police Command has arrested four suspects over an alleged conspiracy to kidnap a resident after threatening him with a ₦30 million ransom demand, successfully disrupting the plot before it could be executed.
According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, the arrests followed a complaint by Alhaji Aminu Garba Jega, who reported receiving anonymous phone calls warning that he would be kidnapped if he failed to pay the ransom.
Police identified the suspects as Muhammad Shafiu, Mansur Ibrahim, Aliyu Umar, and Muhammad Suleiman. Investigators said the group allegedly purchased a new SIM card to conceal their identities and repeatedly contacted the victim, with one suspect disguising his voice to sound like a Fulani man in an attempt to heighten fear and evade detection.
Further investigation reportedly revealed that the fourth suspect, described as a family friend of the victim, allegedly provided the victim’s phone number and family information, which investigators say were used to coordinate the threats.
Acting on intelligence, police operatives tracked and arrested the suspects at Gumbin Kure and Gamjeji villages in Maiyama Local Government Area, effectively foiling the alleged kidnap plan before it could be carried out.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Umar Hadejia, has directed that the case be thoroughly investigated and the suspects prosecuted in accordance with the law. He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Kebbi State.
The police also urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious calls or activities to the nearest police station, assuring the public that all information received would be treated with strict confidentiality.
