Former Governor of Sokoto State and serving Senator representing Sokoto North, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, has once again reminded Nigeria why he is regarded as one of its sharpest political strategists.
In recent months, he has spearheaded a quiet but decisive wave of defections that is steadily tilting Sokoto, neighbouring stares and northern Nigeria’s political balance in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sokoto’s political terrain has witnessed an unprecedented drift of prominent politicians, grassroots mobilisers, and supporters from opposition parties into the APC.
At the heart of it all is Senator Wamakko — a man whose political network, forged over decades of grassroots engagement, continues to make him the most influential voice in the state.
Political watchers say this influx is no accidental but it is the product of periods of quiet consultations, reconciliation, and calculated engagement.
Rather than grandstanding, Wamakko’s approach has been simple: build consensus, preach inclusiveness, and convince opposition figures that the APC offers the clearest path to development and effective governance.
The defectors cut across Sokoto’s 23 local government areas, former commissioners, party executives, youth leaders, women’s groups, and traditional allies.
Many point to three things: Wamakko’s leadership style, his political experience, and his unrelenting commitment to Sokoto’s progress.
For the APC, each new entrant is more than just a number. It strengthens ward structures, revives dormant units, and expands the party’s reach into communities once considered opposition fortresses.
Analysts argue that Wamakko’s staying power goes beyond winning polls. Since leaving Government House, he has nurtured deep ties with traditional rulers, religious leaders, the political class, and grassroots organisations. Those relationships are now the engine driving the current realignment.
Supporters credit him with keeping the APC united, mending fences, and expanding the party’s footprint without resorting to toxic politics. Instead, it has been town hall meetings, stakeholder consultations, and one-on-one persuasion that have done the heavy lifting.
The opposition, meanwhile, is feeling the heat. Every high-profile defection not only swells APC ranks but also erodes the organisational strength of rival parties.
This movement signals a broader struggle for political relevance in Sokoto. With influential figures switching sides, the APC is positioning itself as the natural home for anyone seeking a seat at the table of governance.
Allies say the appeal lies in public confidence in the party’s vision both in Sokoto and at the national level. Critics, however, dismiss it as another example of Nigeria’s transactional politics, where ideology often takes a back seat to influence and access.
Still, few dispute Wamakko’s centrality. His ability to mobilise, attract, and retain political heavyweights has kept him at the centre of Sokoto politics long after his tenure as governor.
Political analysts believe the realignment could reshape the 2027 elections. If the APC sustains this momentum, it could tighten its grip across all 23 LGAs and further diminish opposition strength.
But for ordinary Sokoto residents, party politics is only half the story. The true test, they say, will be whether this political stability translates into better roads, schools, hospitals, security, and jobs.
As consultations continue behind closed doors, one thing is clear: Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko strategist, consensus builder, grassroots mobiliser is once again defining the narrative in Sokoto politics.
If the current tide holds, his efforts may not only cement the APC’s dominance but also redraw the state’s political map for years to come.
These explanation further suggested how incumbent Governor, Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto, steadily follow the footsteps of Senator Wamakko, through reviving all the human and infrastructural development initiatives.
The efforts have surely rejuvenated people acceptance, political dominance, dousing the opposition rivalry and loyalty among party members.
