UNICEF in collaboration with the Kebbi State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA), has provided dignity kits to the Internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Machika and Danko Camps of Danko Wasagu Local Government Area through a humanitarian intervention supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA.
The intervention targeted vulnerable households affected by insecurity and displacement, reaching 100 beneficiaries in each of the two IDP camps, with essential hygiene and sanitation supplies aimed at improving health, wellbeing, and living conditions of the IDP’s.
The dignity kits contain a range of personal and household hygiene items, including sanitary pads, soap, detergent, panties, towels, buckets, water containers, cups, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other materials necessary for maintaining personal hygiene and dignity in emergency settings.
The support forms part of UNICEF’s humanitarian response programme funded by SIDA, which seeks to provide immediate relief and protection to populations affected by insecurity while strengthening access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services.
Dignity kits are emergency support packages typically provided to vulnerable populations, particularly women and girls, during humanitarian crises.
The kits also help in addressing basic hygiene needs, promote personal safety and wellbeing, and enable affected persons to maintain dignity despite challenging circumstances.
The distribution exercise was carried out through the collaboration of UNICEF, RUWASSA, and implementing partners as part of ongoing efforts to support displaced communities across Kebbi State.
The intervention is also intended to reduce the risk of outbreaks of waterborne and sanitation-related diseases in the camps by improving access to essential hygiene materials and encouraging healthy hygiene practices.
However the beneficiaries also expressed appreciation for the assistance, noting that the items would help meet their daily hygiene needs and contribute to their healthier living conditions within the camps.
UNICEF assured to continue to work closely with the Kebbi State Government through RUWASSA, with support from SIDA, to deliver lifesaving water, sanitation, and hygiene interventions to vulnerable populations affected by emergencies in the state.
The dignity kit distribution is one of several ongoing initiatives aimed at protecting the health, dignity, and wellbeing of displaced women, children, and families across the state.
