Troops Rescue Woman, Two Children Abducted in 2017 in Borno

Borno State Government

Troops of the 82 Division Task Force Battalion, operating under Operation HADIN KAI and Operation DESERT SANITY V, have rescued a woman and her two children, nearly nine years after they were abducted in Borno State.

The victims were rescued during a perimeter clearance patrol around Amuda Bridge at about 6:30 a.m. on Friday, August 14.

The rescued woman was identified as 25-year-old Rukaya Mohammed, while her children were identified as six-year-old Hauwa Mustapha and four-year-old Fati Mustapha.

Zagazola Makama gathered that Rukaya was abducted in 2017 from Vartalaka and later forced into child marriage in Chinene, where she lived with her husband in Wunje community.

During preliminary interrogation, Rukaya reportedly told the troops that growing disagreements among members of the terrorist group eventually created an opportunity for her and the children to escape.

She said the opportunity came after some of the fighters abandoned the camp, allowing them to break free and flee the area.

The troops subsequently intercepted and rescued the trio during their patrol, bringing an end to years of captivity.

The woman and her children have since been handed over to relevant authorities for necessary assistance, documentation and further action.

The rescue highlights the continued efforts by troops operating in the North-East to clear terrorist enclaves, rescue victims and restore security to communities affected by insurgency.
