Troops of Sector 8, Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP), have thwarted an apparent attempt by armed men to infiltrate Manja community in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The security operation, which unfolded on Friday afternoon, prevented what could have developed into a major attack on the vulnerable community after troops moved swiftly on intelligence about the movement of suspected armed Fulani bandits from the surrounding mountain ranges.
Credible security sources told Zagazola Makama that the incident occurred at about 2:10 p.m. on August 14, when residents and security operatives noticed a group of armed men heading towards Manja.
The suspects were reportedly dressed in black outfits and red berets and were moving with cattle in the direction of the community, raising concerns of a possible security breach.
Acting on the intelligence, troops deployed around Manja Forest quickly advanced towards the suspected attackers and established contact with the group.
The military intervention reportedly caught the armed men off guard, forcing them to abandon their advance and retreat hurriedly into the surrounding bushes with their cattle.
No major confrontation was reported as the troops’ presence compelled the group to withdraw from the area.
Following the incident, soldiers, working alongside members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN), intensified surveillance and ground patrols around Manja and its adjoining areas.
Security personnel have continued to dominate the area to deter any renewed attempt by armed groups to gain access to the community.
The swift response highlights the critical role of early intelligence and rapid military intervention in protecting communities facing threats from armed groups.
For residents of Manja, the timely arrival of the troops effectively stopped the suspected attackers before they could reach the community, averting a potentially dangerous security situation.
