President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed shock and profound sadness over the killing of retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, who reportedly died while in the custody of bandits in Katsina State.
In a statement issued by the Presidency, the President described the late military officer’s death as a tragic loss to the nation, noting that he was abducted while travelling to his hometown after a distinguished career in service to Nigeria.
President Tinubu also expressed concern over the continued captivity of the deceased’s wife, who remains in the hands of the kidnappers, and prayed for her safe release.
The President extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late General, the Katsina State Government, and the Nigerian Armed Forces, describing the deceased as a patriot who served the country with dedication and honour.
Reacting to the incident, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s determination to confront terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across the country.
He declared that the Federal Government would not succumb to pressure from criminal groups seeking the release of their members currently in custody.
“Bandits, kidnappers and sponsors of terror should now surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State. These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. And no mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians,” the President stated.
Tinubu’s remarks echoed his Democracy Day position that security forces would intensify operations against criminal elements threatening peace and stability across the country.
The killing of the retired General has sparked outrage and renewed calls for stronger measures to tackle insecurity, particularly in the North-West, where kidnapping and bandit attacks continue to pose serious challenges.
As tributes continue to pour in, many Nigerians have joined the President in mourning the late officer while praying for the safety of all those still being held captive by armed groups.
