The political landscape in Sokoto State appears to be shifting once again as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) continues to record high-profile defections from opposition ranks, a development that political analysts say could reshape the balance of power ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The latest wave of defections saw hundreds of members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), including several influential political figures from Gudu, Binji and Tangaza Local Government Areas, dump the opposition party for the APC during the flag-off of the Gidan Madi–Binji–Gande Road Project in Tangaza.
Among the prominent defectors are the immediate past Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Hon. Musa Ausa Gidan Madi, Hon. Faruk Mustapha Balle, Sarkin Arewa, Alhaji Attahiru Salihu Bashar Kalanjeni, Umaru Zuzu, Alhaji Sayyadi Nuhu Binji, Alhaji Sani Ahmad and numerous supporters spread across the three local government areas.
For many political observers, the latest development is more than a routine political realignment. They believe it signals the intensifying contest for political dominance in Sokoto as preparations for the 2027 elections gradually gather momentum.
Analysts note that although defections are common in Nigeria’s political environment, the movement of notable grassroots politicians often carries greater electoral significance than headline-grabbing endorsements from elite politicians. According to them, local political actors frequently control community structures capable of influencing voter mobilisation at the ward and polling-unit levels.
The defectors were formally received into the APC by the party’s State Chairman, Hon. Haruna S. Gobir Adiya, in the presence of Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, APC leader in the state, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, senior government officials and party leaders.
Addressing the gathering, Senator Wamakko described the influx of opposition members as a strong endorsement of Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s leadership style. He argued that the administration’s developmental projects and inclusive governance had continued to attract support from across political divides.
Wamakko maintained that ongoing infrastructure projects across the state had strengthened public confidence in the APC and urged the governor to remain focused on delivering more democratic dividends.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu, while welcoming the defectors, assured them of equal treatment within the APC and reiterated his administration’s commitment to expanding infrastructure and improving the welfare of residents across Sokoto State.
Political analysts, however, argue that beyond the speeches delivered at the ceremony, the symbolism of the event may prove equally important. They point out that the reception of the defectors coincided with the inauguration of another major road project, allowing the APC to combine political messaging with governance narratives.
According to observers, infrastructure development has increasingly become one of the major tools through which political parties seek to consolidate public support. Roads, schools, healthcare facilities and other capital projects often provide visible evidence for governments seeking re-election or political continuity.
Several analysts believe the APC is attempting to build a campaign around governance performance while simultaneously weakening opposition structures through sustained defections.
For the opposition, particularly political allies associated with former Governor and Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the latest defections present another organisational challenge. Although political loyalties can shift before elections, repeated exits by influential stakeholders may compel opposition leaders to intensify grassroots engagement and internal consultations to retain their remaining support base.
Political observers caution, however, that defections alone do not automatically determine electoral outcomes. Nigerian politics has witnessed numerous instances where politicians switched parties without significantly altering voting patterns. Ultimately, they argue, the electorate will judge political parties based on governance, credibility, campaign organisation and local dynamics.
Speaking on behalf of the defectors, Hon. Faruk Mustapha Balle, Hon. Musa Ausa Gidan Madi, Sarkin Arewa, Alhaji Attahiru Salihu Bashar Kalanjeni, Alhaji Sayyadi Nuhu Binji and Alhaji Sani Ahmad said their decision to join the APC was motivated by what they described as the developmental achievements of Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration and the leadership of Senator Wamakko.
They pledged loyalty to the APC and expressed readiness to mobilise support for the party ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The defectors specifically cited projects such as the Wamakko–Bunkari Road and the ongoing Gidan Madi–Binji–Gande Road as evidence of the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing economic activities across the state.
With more than a year before the political atmosphere reaches full campaign mode, analysts expect both the APC and opposition parties to intensify efforts to strengthen their grassroots structures. More consultations, strategic alliances and possible defections are also anticipated as political actors position themselves for what promises to be another fiercely contested electoral season.
Whether the latest movement represents a temporary political wave or the beginning of a broader realignment in Sokoto politics remains to be seen. What is increasingly evident, however, is that the race toward 2027 has quietly begun, with both governance performance and political calculations shaping the emerging battle for the state’s future.
