The political landscape in Sokoto East Senatorial District shifted further at the weekend as the All Progressives Congress (APC) tightened its grip on Goronyo Local Government Area with the defection of thousands of supporters from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The mass movement, involving mainly supporters from Gorau Town, was celebrated at a colourful reception in Gorau/Takakume Ward, where APC leaders described the development as a vote of confidence in the administration of Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto.
Addressing the gathering, APC Zonal Vice Chairman for Sokoto East, Alhaji Muhammad Musa Sarkin Alaru, welcomed the new members and assured them of equal treatment and opportunities within the ruling party. He also applauded Senior Special Assistant, Alhaji Hussaini N. Umar Gorau, for his grassroots mobilisation and commitment to the welfare of the people.
Speaking at the event, Hussaini Gorau said the steady influx of new members into the APC was driven by the developmental strides of Governor Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto and the political leadership of Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko. He pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects, improved rural development and sustained efforts to tackle insecurity and banditry as key factors attracting more supporters to the party.
The APC Chairman in Goronyo Local Government Area, Alhaji Sa’idu Muhammad Goronyo, urged the defectors to remain loyal and work alongside existing members to strengthen the party’s structure ahead of future elections.
Explaining the reason behind the mass defection, spokesperson for the new members, Nasiru Mukhtar Gorau, said they were convinced by what they described as the visible achievements of the APC-led administration, particularly in the provision of roads, social amenities and other development projects in rural communities.
The event also witnessed the presentation of merit awards to the Minister of State for Works, Barrister Bello Muhammad Goronyo, Alhaji Hussaini N. Umar Gorau and APC Sokoto East Senatorial candidate, Alhaji Umar Ajiya, in recognition of their contributions to the development of the area and the growth of the party.
The latest defections further strengthen the APC’s political foothold in Sokoto East while leaving the ADC to contend with another significant loss of grassroots support in Goronyo.
