A sweeping security operation is underway in Monguno as authorities relocate internally displaced persons (IDPs) from Gana Ali and Stadium camps to the Rapid Response Camp, following alarming intelligence linking the areas to insurgent activities.
According to a press release issued by Ayodeji Abiodun, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the affected camps had become infiltration points and safe havens for elements of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), enabling attacks on military positions and civilians within the town.
Security sources revealed that terrorists exploited the proximity of the camps to key military formations, including Charlie 13, launching coordinated assaults and deadly ambushes—most notably the April 12 attack that claimed the lives of soldiers and targeted reinforcements with improvised explosive devices.
The military says several structures used to conceal insurgents and plant explosives have now been cleared, while residents were given time to relocate for their safety. The new centralized camp is expected to enhance surveillance, improve protection, and cut off terrorist access routes from the Marte axis.
Authorities insist the operation is being carried out in line with rules of engagement and with full respect for civilian rights, describing it as a necessary step to dismantle entrenched terror networks within the town.
Residents have been urged to remain calm, comply with security directives, and report suspicious movements as forces intensify efforts to secure Monguno and restore normalcy.
