A dramatic legal battle has unfolded in Jigawa State as a Federal High Court in Dutse ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to hand over one of its operatives, Ifeanyi Onyewuenyi, to the police over allegations of abducting and abusing a teenage girl.
Delivering judgment, Justice Hassan Dikko ruled that the suspect must be transferred for a full criminal investigation, while also ordering the unconditional release of the victim, Walida Abdulhadi, whose ordeal has sparked widespread outrage.
The case centers on allegations that the DSS operative abducted the 16-year-old from Hadejia, subjected her to abuse, and forcefully altered her religious identity. The teenager later gave birth, intensifying public condemnation and calls for justice.
In a stinging rebuke, the court dismissed claims of any internal probe by the DSS, describing it as an attempt to shield the accused from accountability. Justice Dikko labeled the alleged actions “condemnable,” stressing the gravity of the accusations.
Counsel to the victim’s family, Kabiru Adamu, hailed the verdict as a triumph for justice, urging authorities to ensure a transparent and swift investigation once the suspect is in police custody.
The ruling follows an earlier directive by a magistrate court in Hadejia, which had also called for the teenager’s release and the suspect’s transfer—an order previously challenged by the DSS.
With the court’s decision now clear, attention shifts to enforcement, as Nigerians watch closely to see whether justice will be fully served.
