The Katsina State Radio and Television Service (KTRTV) Board has raised concerns over a growing shortage of professional broadcast personnel caused by retirements and staff transfers, even as it approved the promotion of 16 senior officers and intensified efforts to modernise the state’s broadcasting system.
The concerns dominated the Board’s 6th meeting, held in Katsina, where members warned that investment in cutting-edge technology must be matched with adequate manpower to sustain quality public broadcasting.
The Board approved the promotion of 16 senior staff—10 from Katsina State Radio Service (KTRS) and six from Katsina State Television (KTTV)—with effect from January 1, 2026. It also endorsed acting appointments for one senior administrative officer in each station.
Board Chairman, Malam Ahmed Abdulkadir, said the promotions were carried out strictly in line with the approved Schemes of Service, Public Service Rules and other government guidelines, adding that all beneficiaries met the required conditions, including qualifications, years on grade level, performance evaluations and promotional examinations.
Despite celebrating the promotions, Abdulkadir stressed that the stations were steadily losing experienced professionals through retirement and deployment to other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), a development he described as a major challenge to the future of public broadcasting in the state.
He called for greater investment in human capital alongside ongoing infrastructure upgrades to ensure the media organisations remain competitive and efficient.
The Chairman also applauded the impact of recently completed solar power installations at the Katsina State Radio headquarters and the Dutsinma Transmission Station, saying the intervention has stabilised operations and significantly increased transmission hours.
He further hailed the Katsina State Government’s investment in KTTV’s digitisation programme, expressing confidence that the installation of modern digital broadcasting equipment would improve service delivery and align the station with global broadcasting standards.
During the meeting, KTRS General Manager, Alhaji Lawal Attahiru Bakori, briefed the Board on operational gains recorded from the solar project, while KTTV General Manager, Alhaji Abba Zayyanu, updated members on the progress of the station’s digitisation programme and installation of new digital broadcasting facilities.
To underscore its commitment to the transformation agenda, the Board concluded the meeting with an inspection tour of KTTV’s newly installed digital broadcasting equipment, receiving technical briefings on the capabilities of the new facilities.
The Board reaffirmed its resolve to build modern, efficient and sustainable public broadcasting institutions capable of delivering quality information, education and entertainment to the people of Katsina State, while urging timely recruitment of skilled professionals to bridge the widening manpower gap.
