The Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving healthcare through the ongoing construction of a state-of-the-art Imaging and Cancer Hospital, fully equipped with the latest Siemens technology, ranging from Radiology, Oncology, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Hepatology, and more.
The facility is being constructed by Submed Nigeria Limited.
The project is a major milestone in the state’s healthcare agenda, positioning Katsina State as an emerging hub for advanced healthcare, cancer treatment, and diagnostics in Nigeria and beyond.
The initiative follows Governor Radda’s technical visit to Siemens Healthineers facilities in Germany on 31 May 2025, where he engaged experts and inspected advanced medical technologies, including MRI and CT scanners, digital radiography systems, and automated laboratory equipment.
Speaking after receiving technical partners in Katsina today for further project discussions, the Governor described the centre as a strategic investment to strengthen diagnostics and cancer treatment in the state.
He reiterated that his administration is focused on education, healthcare, and social welfare, stressing that access to quality healthcare is a top priority.
“It is unacceptable that people die from preventable causes simply because they cannot afford basic healthcare services. This initiative is part of our effort to change that reality,” he said.
Governor Radda explained that the project is part of broader reforms covering primary healthcare strengthening, secondary facility upgrades, and expanded tertiary services to reduce referrals and improve outcomes.
He added that the introduction of world-class medical technologies reflects the state’s commitment to modern, innovative healthcare delivery.
The facility will include MRI and PET-CT scanners, adaptive radiotherapy systems, and digital platforms for real-time cancer diagnosis and treatment.
He also emphasized continuous training of healthcare workers, both locally and abroad, to ensure the effective operation and sustainability of the centre.
The Governor directed relevant agencies to ensure proper maintenance and efficient use of the facility, describing it as a long-term investment for the people of Katsina State.
He further noted that the centre will serve patients not only from Katsina but also from across Nigeria and neighbouring countries, boosting medical tourism and economic growth.
Earlier, in her presentation, the Director of Operations at Submed, Mojisola Delumo, said the centre will help bridge Nigeria’s diagnostic gap, reduce medical tourism abroad, and position Katsina as a regional referral hub for over 19 states in Northern Nigeria.
Ekta Jhala,Senior Director and Head of Marketing, EMEA Varian said the facility will place Katsina at the forefront of precision radiotherapy, with advanced adaptive treatment technology—one of the few in Sub-Saharan Africa.
She added that the integrated system will connect screening, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up care for better efficiency and patient outcomes.
“This is not just about machines, but about a complete healthcare system that ensures timely and effective treatment,” Ansu Dukuray Head of Eastern and West Africa of the outfit said.
The Commissioner for Health, Hon Musa Adamu described the project as a historic achievement, reflecting the Governor’s commitment to healthcare transformation and innovation.
He noted that the partnership with global medical companies signals a new era of healthcare excellence in the state.
Also speaking, the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Bala Habibu, said the facility represents a long-awaited breakthrough for medical professionals.
“We were trained on technologies we had never seen. Today, they are here in Katsina, improving diagnosis, practice, and research opportunities,” he said.
He added that improved access to diagnostic tools will enable early detection of diseases such as cancer and save more lives.
