A Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) officer assigned to the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, has been suspended after a shocking revelation of an inmate being taken out of prison to visit his girlfriend.
Ogbule Samuel Obinna, the officer involved, was suspended following an exclusive SaharaReporters story detailing how Ibuchi Okoro Eze, an inmate convicted of rape, was illegally escorted to a bar managed by his girlfriend for a conjugal visit.
The scandal broke when a source revealed that this incident, which occurred on September 14, was not the first of its kind, claiming that officers frequently take bribes to allow inmates such privileges.
Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire, and Immigration Services Board, led by Ja’afaru Ahmed, swiftly responded, suspending Obinna for his role in the illicit activity.
In a separate but related scandal, two other senior officers were also suspended in connection with allegations of bribery involving crossdresser Bobrisky and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
