Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has resigned from the Federal Executive Council, setting the stage for a high-stakes political showdown in Oyo State.
The resignation, confirmed in a statement by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, is aimed at allowing Adelabu fully commit to the Oyo State governorship race.
Adelabu formally submitted his resignation letter to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the opportunity to serve in his administration.
In a notable policy push before his exit, Adelabu also proposed the creation of a Coordinating Minister of Energy—a move designed to unify Nigeria’s power, gas, and related sectors under a single reform-driven leadership structure.
His departure signals a major political shift, as the former minister now pivots from steering national energy reforms to battling for control of Oyo’s top political seat—setting up what insiders predict could be a fiercely contested governorship race.
