The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has launched a sweeping crackdown on jungle justice after rescuing two women from a brutal mob attack in Uyo and arresting a suspected ringleader accused of inciting the crowd to execute the victims.
The shocking incident, which occurred on Tuesday morning along Ring Road 3 in Uyo, saw an angry mob strip the women naked, violently assault them, and attempt to lynch them over allegations yet to be verified by lawful authorities.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, the victims were moments away from death when the Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John, witnessed the horrifying scene while heading to his office.
The Health Commissioner reportedly acted swiftly by alerting the Police after observing that one of the women had sustained severe injuries and was bleeding profusely.
Police operatives immediately stormed the scene, dispersed the mob, rescued the battered women, and rushed them to a medical facility where they are currently receiving treatment and responding positively.
In a swift intelligence-led operation, officers arrested one Emediong Robert, 22, from Ikot Ekwere in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, who was allegedly caught actively inciting the mob and calling for the execution of the victims.
Condemning the attack in strong terms, the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, described the incident as barbaric, unlawful, and a direct assault on human dignity and the rule of law.
He vowed that the Command would hunt down every individual linked to the attempted mob killing, warning that Akwa Ibom would not be allowed to descend into “a jungle where mobs brutalize citizens at will.”
The Police boss stressed that no allegation against any individual justifies torture, public humiliation, assault, or attempted murder, insisting that suspects remain innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law.
The Command also praised Dr. Ekem Emmanuel John for his courage, humanity, and prompt intervention, noting that his actions undoubtedly saved the lives of the two women.
Residents were further warned against taking the law into their own hands and urged to report suspected offenders to security agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining law, order, and public safety across the state while promising severe consequences for anyone involved in mob violence or extrajudicial actions.
